Illustration/Interior Layout/Cover Design

Job: Through Reedsy I was hired to illustrate and ready a children’s chipboard book for print on demand.

Programs: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator

The client requested that the animals be done in a realistic style, suggesting I use stock photos to depict them. Using the prose provided by the client, I searched for and acquired stock photos of each animal mentioned in the text. Some of these animals had to be cropped out from other stock photos and then photoshopped onto a different background.

To the right, you can see four pages of the book featuring an elephant and he main character interacting with one of the animals.

The client didn’t have a number of pages in mind, so I had to figure out what would be a good number of pages that the story could fit in. After figuring that out I was able to determine the spine width and set the guides indicating the book’s margins and bleeds. To the left is a template I created to figure out the middle of each page as well as where the margins would lay when first starting on the page.

To the right are two other design concepts I was playing around with when coming up with the cover design.
